Largest outdoor shopping center in britain
Liverpool ONE in Liverpool is one of the largest and most well-known shopping centers in the UK, as well as the largest open-air shopping center in the country. It opened in two main phases – on May 29, 2008, and October 1, 2008 – during Liverpool's year as the European Capital of Culture, marking a turning point in the regeneration of the city center. With an area of approximately 153,000 square meters, the center spans 42 acres and includes over 170 shops, restaurants, and leisure facilities. It is located in the heart of the city, close to the famous Albert Dock and the waterfront, and has catapulted Liverpool into the top 5 of the UK’s most popular shopping destinations. Since its opening, it has attracted over 22 million visitors annually and significantly boosted the local economy.
Unique dining options in liverpool
Liverpool ONE is not a traditional enclosed shopping center, but an open, urban development project that extends around existing streets of the city and is divided into six distinct districts: Paradise Street, South John Street, Peter's Lane, Hanover Street, The Leisure Terrace, and Chavasse Park. This structure was developed by the Grosvenor Group, which originally owned the center before it was taken over by Landsec in December 2024. Construction began in the spring of 2004 with the excavation of Chavasse Park, followed by the actual construction in the autumn of that year. The total investment was valued at £920 million, with construction costs alone amounting to £500 million. A notable feature is the diversity of architecture, as each shop was designed by a different architect, giving the center a unique visual identity.

The shopping offering is wide-ranging and covers all areas – from high street brands to designer stores. Anchor stores include the department store John Lewis & Partners and Marks & Spencer, which took over the space of the former Debenhams in 2023 after it closed in 2021. Other well-known names include Zara, Apple, JD Sports, Hugo Boss, and Charlotte Tilbury, while Peter’s Lane serves as a fashion district housing luxury brands like Flannels, Reiss, and The White Company. The center is also home to the only Beauty Bazaar by Harvey Nichols in the UK, an exclusive beauty store that spans several floors. For football fans, there are official stores for Liverpool FC and Everton FC offering souvenirs and merchandise. The variety is complemented by independent and local brands, giving the center a special character.

Leisure and entertainment also play a significant role. The center houses a 14-screen Odeon cinema complex, the largest in Liverpool with over 3,000 seats and an IMAX screen. For families or adventure seekers, there is Jungle Rumble Adventure Golf with two 18-hole mini-golf courses, as well as Gravity MAX, which offers 12 immersive experience activities. Chavasse Park, named after the local Chavasse family, including war hero Noel Chavasse, is an award-winning public space with the Green Flag Award and provides space for relaxation or events such as markets and festivals.
Public transport connections are excellent, with the Liverpool ONE bus station, built in 2005, serving as a central hub for local buses and National Express coach services. Three car parks – including the Q-Park with 3,000 spaces under Chavasse Park – provide ample parking for drivers. Additional amenities such as an information center, elevators, ATMs, a shopmobility service for people with reduced mobility, as well as toilets and baby changing facilities, make the center particularly accessible.
